Appeal for an International Association of the Free Thought

Appel pour l’Association Internationale de la Libre Pensée

On the Fourth of July, 2005, on the occasion of the World Congress of IHEU at Paris, a World Congress took place at the initiative of the French Libre Pensée in which 250 participants from 29 countries debated of the necessary action of the Free Thought.

Coming from all the continents, the participants decided that we should collectively put an end to the dispersal of associations which claim to belong to the Free Thought or Atheism across the world.

Indeed, the indispensable struggle for the separation of religions and the states, although its form is always national, obviously takes on an international character through the political and philosophical principles that are raised.

The struggle for the triumph of the absolute freedom of conscience can only be fought through the institutional demand of the complete and uncompromising separation between the public sphere and religions. This philosophical movement has its source in the Enlightenment which has enlightened the world.

In more than two centuries, starting from the United States of America, the Separation was spread to Mexico, France, former USSR, Turkey and many other countries such as Spain in 1931. Far from weakening, in spite of many ups and downs, this historical movement of emancipation of peoples and conscience has been steadily continuing. Recently, it was Nepal and Bolivia’s turns to achieve this liberating move.

Inspired by this concern, the 250 participants in the 2005 World Congress of the Free Thought promoted the building of the International Liaison Committee of Atheists and Free Thinkers (ILCAFT / Comité International de Liaison des Athées et des Libres Penseurs - CILALP).

Since 2005, the ILCAFT has started to work. Exchange of views has taken place, notably through the Internat. On two occasions, the ILCAFT met, on June 4, 2008 at Washington-DC, then at London on June 7, 2009.

On both occasions, the participants in those meetings confirmed their agreement to lay the foundations of a new International Association of the Free Thought. They felt that the right moment and the right place for that foundation could be undoubtedly the next World Congress of the International Humanist and Ethical Union (IHEU) at Oslo in Norway on August 2011.

That is why, in conformity with this renewed mandate, the signatories of this appeal call upon all sister associations across the world to resolutely move toward this new step.

The signatories appeal to them so that they express their views on the following issues :

1- Are you interested in the building of an International Association of the Free Thought ? 2- Are you willing to join in the World Congress of the Free Thought which is to lay the foundations of its building in Norway in August 2011 ? 3- Would you like to take an active part in the Preparatory Committee of this World Congress ? 4- Would you like to be regularly informed of the advancement of the process ?

Delivering petition to Downing Street

Tuesday 9 March

JPEG - 2.3 kb Representatives of the National Secular Society delivered a 28,000-name petition to Downing Street on Thursday, requesting that the cost of the Pope’s trip to Britain be borne by the Church rather than the taxpayer.

The delegation from the NSS – including President Terry Sanderson, Executive Director Keith Porteous Wood, Council members Elizabeth O’Casey and Gerard Phillips and staff members Tessa Kendall and Stephen Evans – presented the petition with a covering letter to Gordon Brown calling on him to downgrade the visit to "pastoral" so that the Church is made responsible for the estimated £20 million cost.

NSS and Libre Pensée to join in commemoration of French secular martyr

Monday 8 March

JPEG - 6.2 kb On 4 July 2010, the NSS will be joining the French organisation Libre Pensée to commemorate the death of the Chevalier de la Barre in Abbeville.

In 1776 the nineteen year old was tortured and executed for refusing to raise his hat or kneel down when a religious procession passed by as well as singing an ’impious’ song and reading irreligious books – including the work of Voltaire. During the fight for separation of Church and State in France, the Chevalier became a figurehead and every year, a rally has taken place on the day of his death.

The NSS has been invited by our sister organisation Libre Pensée to join this year’s commemoration and banquet. You will be very welcome to go to Abbeville, which is around an hour from Calais by car, but it will involve making your own way to the event.

Abbeville is close to Le Touquet and the delightful Baie de Somme and there are wonderful tourism opportunities in the area. However, as the French school holidays will have just started, it might be useful to book any accommodation well in advance. If you need some suggestions, or more information, please write to enquiries@secularism.org.uk . JPEG - 164 kb

UK House of Lords adopt measure against caste discrimination

Thursday 4 March

JPEG - 3.8 kb Following intensive lobbying by the National Secular Society, the The UK’s House of Lords on 2 March 2010 adopted an amendment to the new UK Equality Bill, paving the way for caste discrimination to be made illegal. Lobbying by the NSS was given a new focus by first international conference on untouchability hosted by IHEU and held in London last summer.

The victory was reported by the BBC at: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_polit...

Keith Porteous Wood of the UK’s National Secular Society commented: “This victory is historic; the UK is the first Western country to pass such legislation. I hope it will encourage other states where caste discrimination is practised to do likewise, or – in the case of India – enforce the legislation it already has.”

Since speaking at the London conference last June, both Lord Avebury and Keith Porteous Wood have been working hard to bring this amendment about. Initially, the prospect of success seemed remote, as neither the Government nor the Equality and Human Rights Commission were supportive. Lord Avebury and Wood brought together powerful speakers for the parliamentary debate on the Equality Bill, some of whom spoke from personal experience of caste. This clearly persuaded the Government to reconsider. They also encouraged anti-caste groups to work together and pool information, often for the first time, and sought out lawyers knowledgeable in this specialised area.

The Government convened a meeting of around 50 members of anti-caste groups who gave moving accounts of the discrimination they had suffered. At the next parliamentary stage the Government accepted an amendment, of which Lord Avebury was a co-signatory, enabling caste to be added to the Bill. The Equality Bill has not quite finished its passage through Parliament, but it is almost certain that the amendment will survive unopposed.

The Government has commissioned a survey into caste discrimination which will report in summer or autumn 2010. It is anticipated that, following this, the anti-caste discrimination measure will be activated.

Also active in bringing about this success have been NSS Honorary Associates Dr Evan Harris, Lord Desai (who also spoke at the London Conference) and Lady Flather. We thank them all.

Protest the Pope

Monday 1 March

JPEG - 6.2 kb

Say NO to an official State Visit in the UK !

The Pope not only opposes the right of women to have an abortion but also their right to contraception to prevent the need for abortions.

He also opposes women’s access to IVF fertility treatment to give childless couples the chance of parenthood. He condemns potentially life-saving embryonic stem cell research.

Pope Benedict denounces the use of condoms, even to stop the spread of HIV, as well as claiming falsely that condom usage “increases” the rate of HIV infection. This puts millions of lives at risk.

He opposes legal equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, and their full protection in law against homophobic and transphobic discrimination

The Pope has authorised the Catholic Catechism, which condemns same-sex relationships as a “grave depravity” and “contrary to natural law.” In 1992, he criticised gay sexuality as a “tendency ordered towards an intrinsic moral evil.”

While condemning loving, consenting adult same-sex relations, the Pope played a role in shielding Catholic clergy guilty of child sex abuse from prosecution, as revealed in the 2006 BBC Panorama programme, Sex crimes and the Vatican.
