The President of the French Republic, in his capacity of President of the European Union, has just delegated to the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and the Interior the organisation of a colloquium called “Religions and Public Authorities in the European Union” in Paris, on December 17, 2008.

The 27 Member States of the European Union are requested to send a delegation on a set model made up of a governmental official responsible for religious affairs or religions within the State:
- A Catholic Priest or a Protestant Pastor,
- A Rabbi,
- An Imam.

In so doing, the French Presidency is implementing the verbal commitment made during Pope Benedict’s visit by integrating religions in the public management of State affairs.

Clearly, this is a violation of the 1905 law of separation of Religions and the State.

Actually, this calls into question the French Constitution which expressly provides secularism in the Republic.

Clearly, the aim is to grant a special status to the three above mentioned religions, which amounts to establishing discrimination among citizens.

The Belgian Centre d’Action Laïque belge (asbl) asked secularist organisations to call on the public authorities in their countries to boycott this meeting.

The Fédération Nationale de la Libre Pensée completely supports this action. The Federation draws the citizens’ attention on the consequences of this policy of religious integration.

It intercedes with the Presidency of the Republic to renew its demand of an interview in order to make the secularist citizens’ opinion known – don’t forget that they are the majority.
