On the Fourth of July, 2005, on the occasion of the World Congress of IHEU at Paris, a World Congress took place at the initiative of the French Libre Pensée in which 250 participants from 29 countries debated of the necessary action of the Free Thought.

Coming from all the continents, the participants decided that we should collectively put an end to the dispersal of associations which claim to belong to the Free Thought or Atheism across the world.

Indeed, the indispensable struggle for the separation of religions and the states, although its form is always national, obviously takes on an international character through the political and philosophical principles that are raised.

The struggle for the triumph of the absolute freedom of conscience can only be fought through the institutional demand of the complete and uncompromising separation between the public sphere and religions. This philosophical movement has its source in the Enlightenment which has enlightened the world.

In more than two centuries, starting from the United States of America, the Separation was spread to Mexico, France, former USSR, Turkey and many other countries such as Spain in 1931. Far from weakening, in spite of many ups and downs, this historical movement of emancipation of peoples and conscience has been steadily continuing. Recently, it was Nepal and Bolivia’s turns to achieve this liberating move.

Inspired by this concern, the 250 participants in the 2005 World Congress of the Free Thought promoted the building of the International Liaison Committee of Atheists and Free Thinkers (ILCAFT / Comité International de Liaison des Athées et des Libres Penseurs - CILALP).

Since 2005, the ILCAFT has started to work. Exchange of views has taken place, notably through the Internat. On two occasions, the ILCAFT met, on June 4, 2008 at Washington-DC, then at London on June 7, 2009.

On both occasions, the participants in those meetings confirmed their agreement to lay the foundations of a new International Association of the Free Thought. They felt that the right moment and the right place for that foundation could be undoubtedly the next World Congress of the International Humanist and Ethical Union (IHEU) at Oslo in Norway on August 2011.

That is why, in conformity with this renewed mandate, the signatories of this appeal call upon all sister associations across the world to resolutely move toward this new step.

The signatories appeal to them so that they express their views on the following issues :

1- Are you interested in the building of an International Association of the Free Thought ? 2- Are you willing to join in the World Congress of the Free Thought which is to lay the foundations of its building in Norway in August 2011 ? 3- Would you like to take an active part in the Preparatory Committee of this World Congress ? 4- Would you like to be regularly informed of the advancement of the process ?

Le 4 juillet 2005 à Paris, à l’occasion du Congrès international de l’IHEU, s’est tenu, à l’initiative de la Fédération française de la Libre Pensée, un Congrès mondial dans lequel 250 participants de 29 pays ont débattu de la nécessaire action de la Libre Pensée.

Venus de tous les continents, ils ont estimé que l’on devait collectivement mettre fin à la dispersion des associations qui, à travers le monde et les pays, se réclament de la Libre Pensée et de l’athéisme.

En effet, l’indispensable lutte pour la séparation des religions et des Etats, si elle est toujours nationale dans sa forme, revêt indéniablement un caractère international par les principes politiques et philosophies qu’elle pose.

La lutte pour le triomphe de l’absolue liberté de conscience ne peut être menée quand dans la revendication institutionnelle de la séparation pleine et entière de la sphère publique et des religions. Ce mouvement philosophique a pris sa source dans les Lumières qui ont éclairé le monde.

En plus de deux siècles, la Séparation est partie des Etats-Unis d’Amérique du Nord pour se propager au Mexique, en France, en ex-URSS, en Turquie et dans bien d‘autres pays comme en Espagne en 1931. Loin de s’affaiblir, malgré bien des vicissitudes, ce mouvement historique d’émancipation des consciences et des peuples ne fait que se poursuivre. Récemment, ce fut au tour du Népal et de la Bolivie d’accomplir ce geste libérateur.

C’est inspiré de cette préoccupation que les 250 participants du Congrès mondial de la Libre Pensée de 2005 ont promu la constitution du Comité International de Liaison des Athées et des Libres Penseurs (CILALP).

Depuis cette date, le CILALP a commencé à agir. Des échanges ont eu lieu, notamment par internet. Par deux fois, le CILALP s’est réuni le 4 juin 2008 à Washington-DC, puis à Londres le 7 juin 2009.

Par deux fois, les différents participants à ces réunions ont confirmé leur accord pour que soient posées les bases de la Constitution d’une nouvelle Association Internationale de la Libre Pensée. Ils ont estimé que le moment et l’endroit les plus propices pour cela était, sans nul doute, le prochain congrès international de l’Union Internationale Humaniste et Laïque (IHEU) d’août 2011, à Oslo en Norvège.

C’est pourquoi, fort de ce mandat renouvelé, les signataires de cet appel s’adressent à toutes les associations sœurs à travers le monde pour avancer résolument vers cette étape.

Les signataires les sollicitent pour qu’elles manifestent leurs sentiments sur ces différentes questions :

1- Etes-vous intéressés par la Constitution d’une Association Internationale de la Libre Pensée ? 2- Etes-vous d’accord pour adhérer au Congrès mondial de la Libre Pensée qui doit jeter les bases de sa constitution en août 2011 en Norvège ? 3- Souhaitez-vous participer activement au Comité de préparation de ce Congrès mondial ? 4-Voulez-vous être informés régulièrement de l’avancée des travaux ?
